EMPIRE STYLES RELAUNCH: LOVE LETTER TO BLOGGING {linkup}

Today is a big day. I’m relaunching my blog. I’m connecting with a ton of other amazing bloggers. I’m hosting my first linkup. Today is a big day.

Empire Styles’ relaunch is not something I expected for the beginning of summer. Any loyal Empire Styles readers know that I took a 8-ish month break from blogging. Why? I could blame it on the insanely stressful schedule of junior year, and that is partially true. But also, I was uninspired, unmotivated, and bored with blogging. I was throwing together mediocre content for the sole purpose of posting. I thought that if I kept forcing myself to keep up with posting, I would eventually be inspired again, as I was last summer, and continue blogging on my merry way.

Nope. I thought about blogging a few times during my break, but was never inspired enough to produce something quality. I started thinking about blogging again in the spring, and figured I would wait until summer. Jamie emailed me about participating in her Bloggers Discuss panel with the topic being Summer Blogging Goals. What a perfect comeback to blogging!

So here we are. Jamie helped push me to start blogging again. I knew I wanted to, but her linkup motivated me to start now. And, with my new set of goals, I have some motivation to keep blogging and achieve these goals. So thank you Jamie, for giving me a reason to start blogging again. (Jamie’s Bloggers Discuss posts were used as a model for this post!)

After Jamie’s linkup, I was overflowing with blog ideas. But could I really just return to blogging unannounced, out of nowhere? So I decided to have an official relaunch, and ta da! In the spirit on embracing my love for blogging, I will be writing a love letter to blogging, with the help of some lovely bloggers.

So, why do I love blogging?

I love it because I can create my own space, and do whatever I want with it. Empire Styles is a reflection of me: the aesthetic, the writing style, the content and topics I choose to include, the design of the site… It is all me. As a kid, I loved to make collages with magazine clippings in my journals, then write about them. Empire Styles is my big kid, tech savvy journal.

I love it because its a medium to express my love for fashion. I am proud of the outfits I put together and my style. Blogging gives me a chance to share my outfits, talk about fashion and learn more, too!

I love it because I am a writer. Throughout my childhood, I read American Girl Magazine, Discovery Girls and Girls’ Life and then create my own magazines with construction paper and crayons after. I’ve always loved writing, and still do. Blogging is the perfect outlet for writing, especially when its about something I am interested in!

I love it because I’ve met some incredible people. I love the blogging community, all of you. You all are seriously awesome. There’s nothing better than connecting with people who have similar interests and are working towards similar goals. I love every comment, tweet and email I get from readers and fellow bloggers.

I love blogging because its me. I’ve loved and embraced technology for as long as I can remember, since I was downloading and installing KidPix (#tbt) software on my dad’s computer in elementary school. I’ve loved fashion since I was three years old asking my mom why we couldn’t add pink fringe and sequins to my jeans because they were “too plain”. Blogging is the perfect medium for me because it embodies who I am, and through blogging, I am able to share my interests and passions through writing and connect with other people with similar interests. How perfect?!

So thank you, blogging, for being my online oasis where I’m free to explore my passion for fashion, connect with likeminded people and try new things.

Since I talked so much about why I love blogging, I thought it would be cool to get some Empire Styles readers and fellow bloggers involved to hear about why they love blogging, what they’ve learned as a result of blogging and what some of their favorite blogs are. So take it away, ladies! (Anyone with a * next to their name means that they’re linking up with me to write their own love letter to blogging post on their own blog, so be sure to check out their love letters!!)

Cathleen* (Classy Cathleen): I love talking. I love writing. I love reading. I love myself. I knew I would love blogging. AND GUESS WHAT! I do! I love being 100% me and not caring about what others think about me. I love having my own place on the internet that I am fully in control of and writing whatever I want on it. I don’t know if I’ll always be writing for Classy Cathleen in the future (sad to talk about I know), but I FOR SURE have fallen in love with blogging and I know there will always be a blog or something of the sort in my life from here on out. I see Classy Cathleen lasting definitely through the rest of my years in school. After that, I have absolutely no idea, but I know I’ll always be blogging or writing. I’ve been reading blogs since the 5th grade (lemme tell you they’ve changed a lot since then) and I’ve literally read everything from DIY blogs to Fashion and Beauty to Outdoors and EVERYTHING in between! Currently I’ve really been loving the following: The Fashion Newcomer // Skyscrapers and Palmtrees // Your Typical Prep // Stylish Sassy, and Classy // The Monogrammed Midwesterner …. However I might be a slight bit biased… I know the girls of Your Typical Prep, Stylish Sassy and Classy and Monogrammed Midwesterner, and Fashion Newcomer personally and they are just the best.”

Jenni (The Beautiful Little Fools): “I’m really bad at making decisions, so trying to choose my favorite thing about blogging was a nightmare especially when there are so many things to love about it. I love getting to meet new people through my blog and it’s so much fun getting to participate in things like this. My favorite thing though would have to be that my blog allows me to have a voice. I have always been more introverted than extroverted, but I also have a lot of things I want to share with the world and blogging allows me to do just that.”

Jamie* (The Fashion Newcomer): “My favorite thing about blogging is the creativity you have when you maintain your own website. In school, assignments have strict guidelines. Online, you can do whatever you want when it is under your own domain. This flexibility allows me to challenge my writing and push myself to try new things. I have learned that I truly do love to write, and I don’t think that I could ever go without doing it – thus the blog is a great way to satisfy my writing itch. My favorite blog to read is Corals & Cognacs. Hands down, Hallie is my favorite. Her style is amazing and her voice is SO real. The mix of her open-ness, style, and personality makes her blog so engaging.”

Rhiannon* (Peace & Blessings Blog): “My favorite thing about blogging is getting creative with my posts. I love to write, but I use my blog as an outlet for photography and videography as well! I also enjoy the fact that my blog is MY space to discuss whatever I please – I’ve been able to share ideas and provide thoughts on topics that really inspire me. I’ve learned that when you publish your thoughts on the Internet, you’re bound to come in contact with some haters. Who cares?! I’ve learned not to let unwarranted criticism get me down, and to be unapologetically myself when I am creating content for my readers. Being unique and different is something great! I really enjoy Princess Burlap, because of her writing style. She has a way of telling a story in her posts that just make you want more. I also enjoy The Other Juliette – I admire her witty sarcasm and humor sprinkled throughout the blog.”

Carrie (Carrie on Blogs): “As cheesy as it sounds my favorite part about blogging is the community. If you really make an effort to get to know people the community actual seems pretty small and you can definitely find your group of friends. I don’t know what I would do without the friends I have made through blogging. I have learned so much about myself since I started blogging. I have learned that I love social media for its true power of being able to connect us all. I have learned that I am extremely self motivated. I have learned that no one is perfect, and more importantly, that being imperfect is totally okay. I have learned that I love giving advice. Finally, I have learned that I am a serious night owl. I read so many blogs it is ridiculous and I genuinely love all of them so I am going to have to pick my top three. For popular bloggers it would be Corals + Cognacs, Covering the Bases and Classy Girls Wear Pearls. For smaller bloggers it would be (this is way too hard) The Fashion Newcomer, Behind Her Monogrammed Macbook and Practically Imperfect.”

Emma* (Alkaline + Chrome): “My favorite thing about blogging is the freedom of voice. I can write a stream of consciousness post, or a well-researched article, or pictures, or a combination of them all. I can write using my own voice, and I don’t sound over-analyzed or contrived the way that many articles in publications sound. The ability to use my true voice helps me connect with an audience, which is my other favorite thing about blogging. Starting my own blog has definitely helped me grow as a writer, but most importantly it has taught me the value of communication. I know that reaching out to industry contacts, fellow bloggers, and potential mentors is crucial to my personal and professional growth, and I have developed the skills to do this successfully.”

Hillary (Preppy & Petite): “Hands down my favorite part is looking back at my posts later. There is so much that gets overlooked, or forgotten as life goes on and documenting it on my blog is a great way for me to look back on the past year. Probably the biggest thing though is that I’m a graphic design major so I’m used to creating headers and html but blogging has taught a whole ton about photography. I still hope to improve though!I love “Note to Self” by Sarah Tolzman, “Simply Lauren Gray”, “Classy Girls Wear Pearls”, “The College Prepster”, “Extra Petite”, and “The Londoner.” I could go on and on but those are the ones I read absolutely every day.”

Megan (Bowtiful Life): “Blogging has hit on a few of my really sweet spots, then taken those skills, and strengthened them. I’ve always been very into organizing and planning ahead, but blogging has made those qualities an even bigger part of my personality due to scheduling and planning posts ahead of time as well as keeping myself organized so that I’m always on top of things. I’ve also always loved photography, so taking my own pictures for posts and social media has helped to encourage and grow that interest. Above all, I think that the biggest thing blogging has taught me is to be true to yourself and your own style and personality regardless of what people may say. Not everyone is going to love everything that you wear or post, but as long as you’re staying true to you and yourself, then you’re doing what’s right for you and your blog. Blogging isn’t about being just like everyone else, it’s about standing out while representing an esthetic that’s truly your own and that you can stand behind.”

Bella & Lexie*(They Were Fearless): “It has been such a fun and eye-opening experience for us. Our favorite thing about blogging has been seeing that people from all around the world are reading our blog. There is nothing more amazing than knowing that your voice is being heard by so many different people from so many different backgrounds and cultures. Blogging allows us to express our ideas and point of view on beauty, fashion, and lifestyle and TheyWereFearless has been such a great platform for us to be able to share what we think with our readers. We are new to the blogging world so we are very excited to see what is to come for us and for the blog!”
