FAME SHOWS BUYING TRIP RECAP

A few weeks ago, I, along with my boss and three other coworkers, attended the FAME and FWD Shows, BJI Fashion Group trade shows at the Javits Center in New York City. I work for a local boutique in my town and was able to go on this trip as an assistant buyer. I had been to the shows once before, but it is always fun to be able to participate in the buying process. One of my coworkers and best friends, Lexie, is also posting today about our buying trip so be sure to check out her post too!

We were shopping for our summer line, so we were on the hunt for tons of dresses, tops and summer accessories. Some of the key trends we were looking for included off-the-shoulder tops (everyone and their mother is trying this trend!), blue & white, crochet and lace, romantic looks and flowey printed pants. Overall, the buying trip was super successful. Our team had such a fun time together and we found some incredible pieces for summer.

Basically, we walked into the show with a vision of the style of items we wanted to buy as well as specific items we wanted. From there, we walked around to the vendor’s booths and started shopping. Each vendor had a booth with some racks and samples of their merchandise. From there, we shopped that vendor, picked out what we liked, ordered it and then moved on to the next vendor.

Going on this trip was not only a ton of fun, it was very educational and informative. While I don’t think I want to have a career in buying, it is important to know about all different parts of the industry. To have the opportunity to be an assistant buyer at 18 years old is truly a dream come true.

Working at a small women’s clothing boutique for the past three years has completely transformed my ideas about the fashion industry and fashion in general. My passion for this industry continues to grow with each day of work. And most of the time, it doesn’t even feel like work! I plan on doing a whole post devoted to my job with more details about the store itself, what I’ve learned and small businesses. Stay tuned for that in a few weeks (probably will be up the last week of June!).

Here are some fun pictures from the day of buying:

  1. This place doesn’t have any 'i'm too cool and busy for you' wait staff. As per me, everyone here is nice, friendly, and helpful and they really seem to like their jobs there and that is important to me. At these lofty spaces we had an awesome experience.
